A splendid tribute, my friend. The soldier in the picture is a member of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, “The Old Guard,” who perform ceremonial duties at Arlington Cemetery, including guarding the Tomb of the Unknowns. A few years ago, as Hurricane Isabel threatened the Washington area, the captain of the guard called the guardpost at the Tomb and told them to secure and seek cover. The soldier refused. When asked why he said, “Sir, because it’s my duty.”

  • John, thanks so much for the kind comment and most of all for the background info. I did photograph the soldier at the Tomb of the Unknown. That’s a great story about the soldier refusing to leave his post. Thanks very much.

Poignant! Tells our story. Tells WAY more than that even! If you have not been raised in the U.S. you just can not understand what “FREEDOM” means!! NO….we will NEVER forget freedom… even if we are enslaved by the powers that be. How many Nations… really KNOW what REAL freedom is?? Thank you…

  • Thank you Jael. Freedom comes with a great price. I love this country.
