The Collector

The boy moved quickly through the thick field of orbs, looking for special ones that had precious metals. He had a nearly full bag when he spotted the special one way out at the edge of the rim. He stopped to shake a few out of his bag to make room for that special one he saw. As he moved away from the center, Lan, his mother, called out for him to be careful. He reluctantly slowed down to a safer speed.

Just as he was about to reach the special orb, Lan called out again to Tor. “Come now, Tor. It’s time to go.” “Aw Mom. I’m almost there.” “Stop what you’re doing and get ready to leave, dear. Your father is waiting.” Tor turned back to look at the special orb once more. He knew that if he went over to it, his mother wouldn’t be pleased. He turned again and gathered up as many of the ones he’d dumped as he could before he had to leave. They made a respectable bulge in his bag. His friends would be jealous.

Tor’s father, VaalTor, approached the two and asked if they were ready to leave. Lan said yes, but Tor complained loudly that he wanted to go get the “special orb.” Tor turned and pointed to the special orb that caught his attention. But VaalTor glanced at Lan and then squatted down in front of Tor to explain that Tor must always obey his mother. He said that they would look for it on their next trip. Tor complained but had to admit that he should obey his mother. He turned to look at the orb one more time. He knew that he’d never get the chance to add Sol to his collection. The people of the Earth and all the planets and moons and the Sun had just been saved.

Ahhhh, we’re special. I sometimes kinda wish he’d picked us up….. Great tale indeed.

  • Thank you sir! If picked up, we would have been put in a case and displayed to all those curious onlookers after a cheap, vicarious thrill. I’d prefer to risk enjoying freedom. JH

I hope they’re not coming back on their next trip any time soon!! Good one Jim! :)

  • Thank you. I’m sure that their perception of time and ours vary greatly, and not just because of size. I wouldn’t worry for about three or four Billion years. JH

  • Although we live in different worlds, I value your opinion and your praise. It helps me to stay grounded. If I didn’t (stay grounded), I think that one day, I’d just float away into deep space. Thank you dearly for your interest and comment. JH
