It was supposed to be a second honeymoon for Betty. She and Bernard had been married for six years now and the shine was starting to wear off their marriage. They had gotten to know each other so well that it seemed like there were no surprises left. Betty stood behind her husband when he wanted to be a mining engineer. And he was constantly looking for the perfect gift for Betty. He finally settled on a two week vacation up in the hills away from everything.
Betty could hardly contain her excitement. She had everything packed in a couple of hours and they drove off the next morning. The cabin was off the main road far enough that no noises except nature sounded in the woods around the cabin. Betty loved it. It was so peaceful. The birds woke you up in the morning. And there were animal sounds rustling through the brush at night. They laughed and went back to sleep.
One morning, when Bernard went to get some supplies for breakfast, Betty began to hear sounds outside. She went out to see what was causing those sounds. When she went out on the porch, a small pebble bounced off the roof and fell to the ground at her feet. When she looked out at the woods, she saw a dark silhouette of a man-like creature not fifteen feet away from where she was. It’s eyes locked with hers. For a brief moment, she froze with fear. Then, she spun around and stumbled toward the door and jumped inside, slamming it shut behind her.
She grabbed her husbands shotgun and watched the door. To her shock, the creature was turning the knob. When it found the door locked, it shouldered the flimsy door ajar. A hairy hand reached inside to grab the door and push it open. She fired the shotgun right through the door and the creature fell back off the porch exposing her husband’s head sticking out of a gorilla suit. When she saw what she’d done, she screamed.
Appearances can be deceiving. Would you know what to do if an ape-like creature began to accost you? Think about it.
