Many of the old cultures believe in the concept of a sentient being that connects humans to nature.

In the aftermath of Black Saturday, people and nature were devastated. For months following, the earth lay blackened, only showing signs of revival with the winter and spring rains.

I’ve used body painting to explore the concept of a half human, half tree creature, moving amongst the dead timber of the old forest killed by the fire, mourning what has been lost, and nurturing the new life emerging from the ashes.

Shot on location in the burnt out forest near Kinglake, Victoria.
