Dennis…we seriously need to talk. When I bought my new camera…this is what I want to take.
Im very inexperienced and don’t get this kind of result. What lense did you use for this? I bought a macro lens…but dont know if I got the right one. Also can you share your camera settings? I just dont know where to begin. I LOVE THIS PIC. I LOVE YOUR WORK. Always have. Its making me go buggy.

I have NIkon gear so here is what I generally shoot and my technique:
Nikon D2X
Nikkor 105mm F/2.8 Macro
SB-600 Speedlight (flash)
I’m shooting all manual: Exposure and Focus.
ISO 100
1/250 sec
F/6.7
0 EV
A lot of practice but know what your minimum focus is. For my lens is around 14 inches (basically from the middle of your camera to the subject)
For the dragonflies and damselflies… they have a territory so watch them and learn where they land. Then slowly go to one of those areas. Dragonflies like bare tree/shrub branches or rocks. Damselflies stay lower to the ground on grasses or rocks. Get comfortable and wait. They will come to you. Slowly move and you’ll be surprised, with a little patience and practice, how close you can get.
Main thing, get comfortable with your lens and camera. Manual focus is the best way to get the sharp as a tack details I strive for. Most pros manually focus, especially the really fine detail photos.
Hope this helps..
Vonnie Murfin
This is amazing! How did you get so close? What settings did you have it on? What lens did you use?

“eye-catching” hehe. The detail is really great. Only one flash? The highlights fooled me into thinking it was dual-flash, perhaps a macro flash. No reflectors? Fill-tubes perhaps?

Sunshine was the fill light…Only the SB-600 speedlight
