Gerijuliaj, thank you so much for your kind words. Perhaps all the time i’m spending here is sharpening my skills after all.

wow, that’s beautiful. but it also raises a question that always bugs me. did this guy know he was being photographed, or published on the www? do we exploit the situation of such people by using them as subjects? maybe if we highlight their plight, that balances the way we have used them. it’s something i’m not sure about, and so i guess i just chicken out and avoid doing these kinds of shots.

shayne, i have also struggled with these questions and don’t think there are any easy or glib answers. it took me a long time to muster the courage to photograph people. there are still prolific shots that i could take that i don’t because they just seem too intrusive or invasive of one’s dignity or distress. in addition, people who have specifically said to me “do not shoot me” (and there have been some) i have not shot. and people who have said “you can shoot me but don’t show me” i have respected as well.

I can’t get this image out of my mind. I keep thinking about an old saying about the futility of wishing. It goes like this:

If wishes were horses then beggars would ride.

Makes me wish for a better life for him and all those like him.

There’s an awful lot of guys like that live round here. It breaks my heart. Especially when the tourists like to photograph them. I often think, there but for the grace of some gigher power, goes any one of us. This man was somebody’s son. Maybe someone’s dad. Maybe he was a college professor or a great artist. In retrospect, I’m glad someone with your talent took this pic, Judith, to remind us that these people are human beings too, because that’s what the pic says to me. ‘I am not garbage, I am not an animal, I am as you are.’ It also says a lot about the government – any government – that neglects people like this, who suffer misfortune, mental impairment and so on.

thank you shayne. i was just telling Helen that i named one of my other images Richard III because on enlarging the image i saw that that’s the title of the book he was reading. i thought it’s at least as important to know that much about him, as the more obvious state of his condition.

Judith, to echo the conversation between yourself and Shane on this post-It is a fine line we tread, taking these images. I think that you have got the empathy and sensitivity needed to not only capture these wonderful images but also in the way that you use them.

  • Judith Oppenheimer

    Judith Oppenhe...

thank you Roy. like many artists, i’m compelled to shoot and display certain images to make more visible that which i feel society would prefer, shamefully, to ignore.
