And that’s how she feels about that.

(This is my brother’s mom-in-law Paula, someone we hold very dear to our hearts. She is a brilliant woman with an amazing life story who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s a few years ago. She still gives the best hugs, hasn’t lost her sense of humor or independent streak, and can tear through the Haggadah in two or three languages (she was fluent in English, Russian, Polish, Hebrew, and Yiddish.)

This reminds me of the poem ‘When I am Old I Shall Wear Purple’, by Jenny Joseph:

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple
with a red hat that doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
and satin candles, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired
and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells

My girlfriends grandmother just passed away with a long battle of alzheimer’s and it is not a fun ride. The hardest part is seeing them suffer for so long but its easier if you can sometimes find humour in it like you did here…. great shot

This is a wonderful and moving portrait. My mother is in the final stages of Alzheimers as well and I can no longer talk to her on the phone. I appreciate the sentiments of this photo entirely. What a precious keepsake. :0) Song
