John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
This is the dupplin cross which stands inside St Serfs church in Dunning, just off the A9 between Stirling and Perth. it is a wonderful 9’th century sandstone sculpture about 6ft tall containing Pictish style carvings of one of the Picts’ favourite religious subjects – King David, as well as various beasts, harpists, and knights.
It is said to mark a key moment in Scottish history in that it is the first time Pictish carvings have been seen on a free-standing cross (which was a monument type used by the invader nations of Britons, Angles, and Scots). it may mark tthe change-over from the ‘kingdom of Pictland’ to the ‘united kingdom of Picts and Scots’ which emerged in the 9’th century under the Gaelic conquerer Kenneth MacAlpine.
i liked this picture of the cross the best, with the light flooding in upon the stone symbol it reminded me of Christ saying he is THE LIGHT.
Many thanks to the tour guide in the church who’se depth of knowledge and enthusiasm really brought the subject to life.
