Eilean Donan Castle, The most photographed castle in Scotland!!
Steeped in history, Eilean Donan was first built in the early 13th century at the head of 3 lochs, Loch Alsh, Loch Duich & Loch Long. The castles were destroyed and rebuilt many times over the centuries of fueds and Jacobite uprisings. Finally, after 200 yrs of laying in ruins it was purchased by Lt. Colonel MacRae-Gilstrap in 1912, By 1932 it was rebuilt with the help of local stonemason Farquhar Macrae of Auchtertyre, almost exactly like the castle that was destroyed in 1719. It is said the form of the reconstruction was revealed to Farquhar in a dream. It is certainly remarkable that it so faithfully follows what surveyor, Louis Petit’s illustration records, though the latter’s drawings were not discovered until long after the reconstruction was complete.
Eilean Donan Castle is situated by Dornie on the A87 road to the Isle of Skye and well worth a visit!
