Wood instead of canvas seems just right here, as it renders the images more organic, palpable, fleshly. The startling arrangement of face, hands, and feet produces quite a jolt, visually and emotionally. We can deduce all kinds of realistic stories to explain what we see, but all those stories can’t stand up to whatever super-realistic truth (surrealistic, perhaps) which the picture holds within itself and which invites me to continue my own pursuit of it.
