Hi, this lovely 1923 Bugatti racing car is to be auctioned at Marulan 2579 NSW tomorrow Saturday 15th October, The “Day Special” started life as a Type 39 Bugatti in 1925. It was imported into Australia in 1926 by Dick Clarke of Sydney.
This car was driven to victory in the Australian Grand Prix in 1931 by the owner Carl Junker. In 1933 when well placed in the 1933 Australian Grand Prix the engine failed with a broken con rod on the last lap.
It was bought by Jack Day in May 1933 who replaced the engine with a Ford V8 hence the name “Day Special”
Driven by Reg Nutt a lot before the second world war and in 1939 the car was rebodied into its present shape. It was also fitted with a Wilson Pre Selector Gearbox.
In 1947 it changed hands being bought by Jack Murray of Bondi, later reffered to as Gelignite Jack Murray, In 1947, 48 & 49 it ran at Bathurst also at Parramatta Park, Mount Druitt and the Hawkesbury Hill Climb
In 1954 it was bought by Ted Lobb of Grenfell and it stayed with Ted until 1974.
Bought by the present owners in 1991 a complete restoration of the car was then carried out. In recent times it has run at Guyra, Uralla and Wakefield Park.
