No Taxon (“Orthorrhapha” (Brachycera excluding Aschiza and Schizophora))
Family Asilidae (Robber Flies)
Genus Diogmites (Hanging-thieves)
Not sure but think it’s
Species Diogmites salutans
Robber flies eat other insects. This one is a hanging thief (Diogmites sp), named for the way it hangs from its forelegs while maneuvering its prey with the remaining four.
These large (1" to 2") robber flies are very common in row crops during the summer. Although this one isn’t hanging he was when I first saw him. I followed him around until I was able to get this shot.
