Brick and Mortar Sales

Today one of the galleries that hangs my work informed me that 3 of my works sold. Castle Rock, Love’s Creek and Root Ball. Castle Rock and Root Ball I have not posted to redbubble because of contractual obligations with a licensing company.

Love’s Creek seems to be a very popular piece the unlimited edition sells well in brick and mortar venues. The artist proof series sold out in the first month that the proofs were up for sale. So Love’s Creek is now mostly unlimited editions for sale but I am getting ready to put out another series on hand made paper of work that revolve around the word Love.

I like galleries because I like to create, I am not a fan of the “mundane” thing called marketing. It is a necessary evil but an evil that I am not very big upon. The gallery owner is designed to not only market their “place” but they also go the extra mile to market the artists in their gallery. They do this because most pay the rent via the commissions on sales of the art. It is for me the perfect union I don’t mind the gallery taking their “cut” since they earn it and I did not have to do anything but create the art.

Art shows you have to market by being at the show in a booth and if the weather is off, or the public attending are not the type of people that would purchase what you do … it can have drastic negative impact on your time, energy and bank account. Some artists thrive in art shows and I say more power to them.

I am just happy that sales via galleries are happening and that more and more galleries are contacting me for my work. Makes for a very happy camper and artist.

Congratulations on your gallery sales. I always have suspected that Brick and Mortar Sales are the way to go. Potential buyers, I think, are more likely to buy art they can actually see hanging on a wall than on a computer monitor though I believe this will change over time.

Congratulations! Wow…that is awesome. I have to agree with you with the marketing. I hate to try to market work. It is very hard for me to talk myself up, not that I am in any way even close to your level of work.

Congrats again, I bet you are very excited. Your work is well deserving of all the attention it get’s.

There is a book called “Artist’s & Graphic Designer’s Market” they also publish the same sort of resources for writers and photographers.

The book is published annually and it sits on my desk and I am always looking through it.

Hey Thomas – Well done! But no surprises…you work speaks for itself…it is wonderful…...
Glad you appreciate galleries too….I work in one as a volunteer, and love to see art represented this way. Sure I love the way “online” works, but nothing beats those physical walls standing proudly to display your artistic creations….
Would love to see your work in a solo exhibition!

Though online sales will continue to grow. I still think it is a long way from what a gallery can give. About 10% all sales of my work come from online venues (all of them and I have my work scattered widely), 40% are via art shows (group shows of the different art leagues/guilds), 50% is gallery sales and gallery sales have grown in the past year it used to be 30% gallery and 60% art show sales.

So I am happy that things are getting better since many of my gallery sales are for limited editions, artist proofs, and one of a kind works so the sales are a bit higher than on the online venues.

    Wendy,

Actually I look forward to that as well… I just got a letter yesterday that 4 of my works were accepted in a gallery show with the theme “rivers and waterways” which is right up my alley.

    Congratulations Thomas

What do you think of the contracts made with the publishers … that sell images of the artists in unlimited editions? ... Paying commissions for work printed.

You have experience with the publishers? ...
