Theory of Invariants

If you had to choose between the Newtonian Law or the Theory of Invariants which would you choose?

The planet Mercury during its elliptical orbit advances according to Newtonian Physics about 1/557th of a degree every century this occurs at the time Mercury is at its closest to the Sun. The Theory of Invariants is accurate and shows that the change is 1/600th of a degree and has been proven to be more accurate.

Every time you use a GPS (Global Positioning System) device you inadvertently prove the Theory of Invariants. By now you are scratching your head since you may never have heard of that Theory in Physics but you know it under a different name but the equation is known by everyone. Albert Einstein ended up calling it the Theory of Relativity.

So what is in a name? If Albert Einstein would have had his way we would be talking about the Theory of Invariants which really does not trip off the tongue very well but then again everything is relative or so Einstein proved.

This is how “Theory of Invariants looks as a card:

I’m a great follower of Einstein’s work including his “Unified Field Theory”, which Einstein never finished but is still being worked on by today’s Quantum Theorists. I must admit that I never heard of his relativity theory being referred to by any other name.

Great mirror effect on the sphere by the way.

“Einstein believed such laws of motion should be much simpler than the more or less accidental clumps of matter that make things what they are. He looked for properties like energy that remained the same during the motions, and even wished later he had called his most famous discovery the theory of invariants rather than the theory of relativity. So when the old Maxwell equations produced a speed for light without telling what stationary platform you should stand on to measure it, Einstein said it didn’t matter: Just fix up all the other old laws to be consistent with light-speed being the same from any uniformly moving platform. The principle was simple, but the changes needed to fix up Newton’s F = ma implied that the world should look very strange to an observer moving near the speed of light. The symbols that represented durations (and lengths) in the old laws had to be re-interpreted to allow them to stretch (and shrink) in the new laws for moving objects. Since light moves at 186,000 miles per second the corrections are negligible at normal speeds, unless you are making very accurate measurements. Today’s global positioning technology requires measurements of time so accurate that Einstein’s corrected laws of motion are essential to describe the motion of the GPS satellites.
Incidentally, the formula for energy derived from the corrected F = ma contains a new term, the famous E = mc2, where m is mass and c the speed of light. “

I first ran across this idea that Einstein wanted to call his most famous theory the Theory of Invariants was in an Astronomy Magazine that was discussing how modern items such as GPS confirmed the Theory of Relativity. It was in a background block where I read it and found it interesting enough to pass it on in my work “The Theory of Invariants”. I cross checked and found a rather substantial set of references to what Einstein wanted to call his Theory of Relativity. You always welcome to do you own independent research if you haven’t already.

A masterful piece…the reflections are fabulous…the old master painters used to use these amber balls to choose the colors for their paintings, all the tones they reflected of a scene would be mixed then applied, thats’ why they are always in sepia…just a bit of trivia, this reminded me of…thanks so much for all your wonderful info ….
