climbed a hundred times.

i believe kids
have special feelings for trees,
especially the ones in their own yard,
the ones they grew up with,
the ones they’ve climbed
a hundred times.

they know the strongest branches,
where the short cuts are,
where their foot will slip,
and where it might get stuck.

they know that special place,
where the sky
and the sunlight
and the birds
meet to play.

kids don’t climb
their special tree to go somewhere,

they climb it to dream.

Man how true, I can picture me in a tree as I read this. I wrote one about a plum tree we had in our yard when I was a kid. Also the cherry tree. Very well done.

I like this very much…we used to have a huge jacaranda tree in our garden, and I used to climb it when I had a bad case of the "It’s not fair!’s, and sit there until my snuffles stopped.

show this to a 10 year old and he will smile…its the understanding of knowing what you write thats so lovely

  • Wow Faith, thank you for those words, that is a very interesting thought. I have never thought of letting, or offering, to a child my prose. Thank you so very much. This moment is what I so dearly love about this little art society we have here. I shall go visit your art.
