The Byron Shire Echo is a weekly independent newspaper that is published in the Byron Shire, New South Wales, Australia.
The Echo, as it is also known, was first published in June, 1986. It currently prints 21 000 copies weekly, and is the sister paper to the Tweed Shire Echo.
The paper was founded in 1986 following marijuana raids by the NSW Police in the valleys surrounding Mullumbimby. Many people believed that the police were acting aggressively and illegally, and local TV and print media refused to touch the story.
It was this lack of honest coverage that caused the late Nicholas Shand, to start the paper, and it continues to champion social justice causes today under publisher and co-founder David Lovejoy.
