Another six new cygnets at West Byron Wetlands. After hatching, the cygnets are tended by the parents for about 9 months until fledging. Cygnets may ride on their parent’s back for longer trips into deeper water, but Black Swans undertake this behaviour less frequently than Mute and Black-necked Swans. The chicks are covered in grey down, and are able to swim and feed themselves as soon as they hatch. Canon 50D, EF70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Great shot Deb. My favourite pair of swans have six new cygnets as well. Saturday was the first time I saw them and I’s say they were about a week old.
Thanks Al, this is a new lot of bubba’s …. the others I was photographing are young teenagers now, they’re getting quite a population in the wetlands!
