Early Evening Hunting by

Barn Owls are moderately common, but generally hard to see, as they are mostly active at night. During the day, the birds roost on concealed tree branches. They are the most widespread and familiar of the owls. Barn Owls are medium sized birds (females slightly larger than males), with a ‘heart-shaped’ facial disc. They have sandy orange and light grey upperparts and white to cream underparts. Both the back and breast are evenly spotted with black.
Barn Owls are generally quiet, the common call being a 12 second rough, hissing screech. Less frequently, birds give whistling and wheezing notes and some snapping and bill clacking during mating and threat displays.

About byronbackyard

Many thanks for checking out my photos, please feel free to give feedback! My wanderings in nature and observations of birds, particularly raptors, is what gives me great joy and constantly reminds me of the beauty and strength of life. My favourites are raptors, I love their freedom, grace, ruthlessness, pride, adaptability and flexibility and I learn much about parenting, protection and blind faith from them.

H’whoa!! Superb capture. Just the right amount of light. You must have waited for a while to get just the right light … or even for days to be sure you could get this picture!!

I love owls and have only seen one in flight. They are so QUIET in flight. Beautiful capture!

  • Many thanks Debi for your lovely comment, my owl shots are few and far between but bring me much joy and inspiration … and a feeling of mystery!
