Bella's Flying by

When osprey chicks hatch, they are covered in white down with brown streaks on the face, back, and wings. This is replaced by charcoal-colored down after approximately 10 days. Feathers begin to replace the down at approximately two weeks. By one month after hatching, chicks have reached 70 to 80% of the adult size. Osprey chicks fledge between 48 and 76 days old.
After fledging, young ospreys begin to hunt on their own. However, they often continue to return to the nest to receive food from their parents for two to eight weeks after fledging.

About byronbackyard

Many thanks for checking out my photos, please feel free to give feedback! My wanderings in nature and observations of birds, particularly raptors, is what gives me great joy and constantly reminds me of the beauty and strength of life. My favourites are raptors, I love their freedom, grace, ruthlessness, pride, adaptability and flexibility and I learn much about parenting, protection and blind faith from them.

I watched our young osprey practice diving a couple of days ago..hilarious, but I would have thought they would instinctively be able to do this. Also our juvenile still has much oranger eyes than the one in this photo. Great shot.

  • Many thanks, she’s quite a different juvenile, she’s been totally hidden till last week, her eyes aren’t as orange, she’s smaller and much quieter … but she can fly like a champion, although she land on a mum once and there was a big kafuffle!
