The Way Home by

The Osprey male heads down the estuary for home, cruising across sunlit clouds towards the nest.
Ospreys are a relatively long-lived bird species. The oldest known osprey in North America was a 25-year old male. The oldest known female was 23 years old. However, very few individuals live to this age. Chance of survival from one year to the next varies between populations, but is estimated to be approximately 60% for young ospreys (less than 2 years old) and 80 to 90% for adult ospreys.

About byronbackyard

Many thanks for checking out my photos, please feel free to give feedback! My wanderings in nature and observations of birds, particularly raptors, is what gives me great joy and constantly reminds me of the beauty and strength of life. My favourites are raptors, I love their freedom, grace, ruthlessness, pride, adaptability and flexibility and I learn much about parenting, protection and blind faith from them.

    Beautiful shot Byron.

  • Such a great subject and the sky is often like this … we’re very fortunate here.

Gorgeously breathtaking Byron! Well done my friend!

  • Thanks so much Kimberly … I’ve had a Grey Morph Goshawk just above my head in my backyard the last two mornings … this morning when it took off it sat in a tree for ages and screamed. Totally awesome. Haven’t checked out the pics yet but I think not very good, they’re very hard to photograph because they hide and they have dark red eyes … hard to focus.
