The Eurasian Coot is recognised by its snowy white bill and forehead shield. The remainder of the bird is dark sooty grey, except for its bright red eye. Immature birds are generally paler than adults with a white wash on the throat. It is able to compress its feathers and squeeze out all of the air, which allows it to dive deeply and for longer periods.

Many thanks for checking out my photos, please feel free to give feedback! My wanderings in nature and observations of birds, particularly raptors, is what gives me great joy and constantly reminds me of the beauty and strength of life. My favourites are raptors, I love their freedom, grace, ruthlessness, pride, adaptability and flexibility and I learn much about parenting, protection and blind faith from them.

Very nice capture and writeup! Thanks to your image, I learned the difference between our American Coots and yours. They are the same mostly but the American has a band on the tip of their beak and a red spot on the facial shield between the eyes. They are more grey than this beauty~ Great capture B.B

  • Thanks Kimberly, they’re hard to photograph as they don’t stay still but the colors were good in this pic!

Good capture, like the reflection. Have you ever seen their chicks, talk about ugly ducklings, they’re the real McCoy with their bald heads.

  • Thanks Paul …. no I haven’t seen the chicks until they’re juveniles … they hide them away in the reeds and herd them up and hide them when they hear you coming!
