Juvenile Osprey a Day Before Fledging by

Stretching her wings a day before first flight, this juvenile Osprey is ready to fledge from the nest in Belongil Estuary, Byron Bay. Mum is nearby on a pole watching after encouraging the juvenile to fly for several days. Both she and Dad circle in above the nest carrying fish and swoop off, over and over, encouraging the chick to take the quantum leap of faith.

About byronbackyard

Many thanks for checking out my photos, please feel free to give feedback! My wanderings in nature and observations of birds, particularly raptors, is what gives me great joy and constantly reminds me of the beauty and strength of life. My favourites are raptors, I love their freedom, grace, ruthlessness, pride, adaptability and flexibility and I learn much about parenting, protection and blind faith from them.

She is beautiful, such power in those wings.

  • Thanks Andrea, she is gorgeous and bigger than both her parents, I suspect she pushed any siblings out to the nest so she could have all the food!

  • Many thanks Teresa, very very happy making. I have a series all taken on the same day and they’re still my most valued and favorite photos!
