Duplicate original layer to make the Working Layer.
Add ALPHA CHANNEL. [in photoshop you can just use the BACKGROUND ERASE TOOL]
Crop image using “thirds” CROP TOOL.
Using the SELECT-BY-COLOUR TOOL select background colours.
Erase selected colours.
Create a new Layer with a black background, positioned behind the Subject Layers to check for stray bits of background that may have been missed.
Using the BLUR TOOL at 25% with Feathered Edge, blur the edges of the subject so that it will blend into the background [and hide any evidence of post-production work]
Create new transparent Layer [new background layer]
Using EYEDROPPER SELECTION TOOL set to Sample Merged Area [25pixel diameter] – sample coloured area of the subject’s body.
Using the BUCKET FILL TOOL fill the new Background Layer with the sampled colour.
DUPLICATE the Subject Layer and place above the original Subject Layer.
Blur the 2nd Subject Layer using GAUSSIAN BLUR set to 10×10 pixels.
Set OPACITY of the 2nd subject Layer to 25%.
Using the ERASE TOOL with Feathered Edges set to 25% erase [twice] both eyes, nostrils and bridge of the nose on the 2nd Subject Layer. [This works to maintain our attention on the most important aspects of the subject]
Using the BURN TOOL set to burn Shadows at 25% with Feathered Edges – darken the shadows around the nostrils, mouth and eyes.
Using the DODGE TOOL set to dodge Highlights at 25% with Feathered Edges – brighten and enlarge the highlights in the eyes.
Using the CLONE TOOL set to 30%, fade out dark specks around the eyes.
Using the CLONE TOOL set to 30%, remove specs of saliva from around the subject’s mouth.
Using the SMUDGE TOOL, clean up stray white spots around both eyes.
