Dad & I were out driving in the mountains behind Brignoles in SW France when he spotted what looked like a huge rock on top of a distant mountain. It wasn’t until we got closer that we realised it was the ruins of a very old castle.
4 hours later and many miles of off-road driving in our rental Citroen Xsara we decided to give up on ever finding a way of reaching it. As we turned the car for home I spotted a bitumen driveway and told Dad to drive up it, just for a look. The driveway soon gave way to a pot-holed dirt track that meandered around a corner and up the hill.
Dad was sick of off roading in a car that definitely didn’t like it either, and he was going to turn around, but I insisted on going just a bit further. Then around the next bend we came to what was once a carpark below the ruins of this castle called Forcalquieret.
It was in amazing condition with many rooms still useable. We thought we had discovered the lost world, but in fact there was a group of young locals setting-up camp in the main courtyard just through that big archway.
We spent the next few hours pushing through brambles and other bushes, climbing over rocks and taking pictures of our discovery. We both felt like Indiana Jones.
This picture will always remind me of the joys of unexpected discovery and the best day I have ever spent with my Father.
