HOW TO: DO TEXT FORMATTING etc IN REDBUBBLE…

Ouch, what a long title… sorry.

This is a little collection of HTML-type codes and stuff that will help you make your posts and Bmails look cool.

While you’re here, checkout my TUTORIAL LIST

HOW TO MAKE YOUR TEXT “BOLD”

Put an asterix " * " at the start and the end of your text.

It will look like, well, it will look just like this!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR TEXT IN “ITALICS

Put a line " _ " at the start and end of your text.

HOW TO MAKE A “QUOTATION BOX”

*This is a “Quote Box”…

NOTE:
- Quotation Boxes must not be preceded by any text. ie… they must be the first entry in a text-box.
- Quotation Boxes only work in “Forum” posts, and “Comment-Box” posts.
- Quotation Boxes do NOT work in Bmails.

The Procedure…

1. Copy the text you want to quote.
2. At the start of the text box enter a " > "
3. Paste the text directly after the " > "
4. Press the [ENTER] key.

HOW TO PUT A “LINE” ACROSS YOUR TEXT-BOX

Use three asterixes " * "

The Procedure…

1. At the end of your sentence press the [ENTER] key. (you need to have a “Linespace” above the asterixes!)
2. Enter three (3) asterixes " * ".
3. Press the [ENTER] key twice. (you need to have a Linespace after the three asterixes!)

It will look like, well, you can see plenty of examples here [there is one just after this text…]

HOW TO PUT A “CANCEL-LINE” THRU YOUR TEXT

Use the Minus symbol " – " before and after your text and you will get a cancel line thru your text.

It will look like this:

Cancel

Cool, huh?

HOW TO CREATE “BULLETED-TEXT”

You use an asterix " * " then a space, then your text…

  • it will look like this

But you can also do Indent Bullets with the asterix by using multiple asterixes, a space and then the text…

  • normal bullet
    • an indented bullet [2x asterixes]
      • another indented bullet! [3x asterixes]
        • and yet another indented bullet! [4x asterixes]

TITLE / HEADER FONTS

Recently the hash symbol " # " has been correctly applied on the site and it no longer creates a bold title font on the first line of a post/Journal etc…

This function has been replaced by new codes that have the added advantage of being able to be used on ANY line within your post/Journal etc.

They are known as the “h-codes” [ok, that’s what I call them].

The format is:

lower case “h” a number from 1-5 a full stop a space then your text.

h1.

TITLE TYPE 1

h2.

TITLE TYPE 2

h3.

TITLE TYPE 3

h4.

TITLE TYPE 4

h5.

TITLE TYPE 5

HOW TO UNDERLINE YOUR TEXT

Use the Plus Symbol " + " before and after your text.

There is a great example of what this looks looks like in the heading for this computer-geek hint. Cool, huh?

you can make big text using the h1. and a space before your first word. Seems only to work at the start of your text, still looking for the way to change colour.

  • BYRON:

I have tried various versions of Textile Markup which has all the colour codes but they don’t seem to work in RB… not yet anyway!

  • drec

or even h2. will look like this.

  • BYRON:

    h1, h2? what is that?

  • BYRON:

do you mean h1 with a dot?

  • BYRON:

ahhh yes – yes you do.

Thank you Byron. So many RB folks don’t know this info. I’ve even asked people who apparently know how to accomplish various things and very few can articulate how to do it! Thank you for your clear, concise instructions. B L E S S Y O U R L I T T L E H E A R T! (Smile.)
I am favoriting this for future reference.

    You’re most Welcome Ellen.

I only have a few gazillion questions. None of them are photographic technique questions . . . yet. Most are accomplishing things on RB.

Okay. First of the gazillion questions:
    1. How can I jazz up my Public Profile Page? I’ve seen people put short stories they’ve written and awards they’ve been honored with. I’ve seen them put examples of their work there too. I’ve been featured almost 20 times in various groups I’ve joined and I don’t even know what I’m doing right! (Or wrong.) (Hah!)

  • BYRON:

everything you need to know about anything is right here:

    BYRON’S REDBUBBLE TOOLS & TRICKS

What you will use the most is HOW TO POST IMAGES OF VARIOUS SIZES. It takes a bit of practice to get it right, and I would suggest BMailing me your practice posts. That way when you get it wrong I can tell you what to do to get it right.

Posting images on your Porfile Page is exactlyv the same process as posting them anywhere else. but… I would recommend against posting images on your Profile Page because it slows down the time it takes for your Page to load onto the screen in which case most people wont bother waiting and will click somewhere else.

Instead, create text or even better – Graphic Links [picture links] to a Journal which contains all your Featured Images.

    2. Someone RB mailed me one of my own photos in a frame. How did they do THAT? It looked awesome. When I asked how they did it, I never got a response. Is it an ancient Chinese secret? Or like the Bush’s Baked Beans commercial . . . a family secret?

  • BYRON:

As above, but check out the link HOW TO POST A FRAMED IMAGE.

Hi Byron, Is there a way to add You Tube video to a profile or photo page? I would like to add a demonstration or progression of my scratchboards to help people understand the technique and possibly open more intrigue toward the art itself.
    Thanks much
    Chris

Check out D R Moore’s Tutorial HOW TO EMBED A YOUTUBE VIDEO

I have never done this, but my understanding is that you can post a youtube video in Journals and your portfolio, but not in the Forums.

  • BYRON:

    anytime.

did you see the NEW “Title / Header font” codes?

  • steppeland

Thanks for this Tutorial! I ‘lost’ the header codes recently, and will have to redo my basic layout for all my artwork-descriptions :’( – but at least, I know how now! – Thank you!

Byron – Big Dumb Question time – How do I change the titles of my various groups on my Profile Page?

    Patrice

  • BYRON:

Do you mean “change the title of a Collection”?

  • BYRON:

VIEW, RENAME, & ADD A DESCRIPTION TO A COLLECTION:

To open and view the works within a Collection, you can click the Collection name from the left-hand side navigation menu, or click the thumbnail from your profile overview page.

While viewing a Collection, you can rename the Collection by simply clicking on the title up the top left side of the page, editing, and clicking the “save” button.

You’ll also notice this is where you can also add and update a description for the Collection.

Thank you very much, Byron. I got it now.

  • Marjolein Katsma

    Marjolein Katsma

So glad I found this… thanks for the update, Byron!

I’m really glad RedBubble went back to support some more Textile markup (even though their parser is still a bit broken, ugh!). I’ve been searching high and low for how to make headings – I saw people using them, but the ones I had in my profile (with the #+space technique) were broken, and ‘bold text’ does not actually structure a text.

(Now if RedBubble could actually go back to simply implementing a decent Textile library, like what they originally started with, we’d all be better off and having to work around fewer parsing errors… ;))

Maybe worth mentioning: there must be a blank line both before and after a heading (‘hN. xxxxxxxxxxx’) line (except right at the top of your document where you can start with the code). Also: multiple blank lines in your code will be ‘collapsed’ so if you want a blank line to appear after, say, a h3 heading (the one with the grey background), type the h3 line, then a blank line, then a line with nothing but   on it, then another blank line, and then whatever should follow your heading… See my profile where I’ve applied this technique.

Thanks for this tip Marjolein. text formatting in rb is way too complicated and spacing the text is the worst nightmare ever.
