This is Macy’s on State Street in Chicago. It was formerly Marshall Field’s until September of 2006 when it was bought out by Macy’s. The atrium is five stories tall with a magnificent Tiffany & Co. mosaic ceiling filled with reflective blues, reds, browns and yellows. This image was taken on December 1, 2012 with all the Christmas trimmings flowing throughout the store.
I remember our father taking us downtown to buy my mother a fancy coat and just marveling at the size of the store. Construction started in 1892 with additions built in later years, one after another until finally, after several different additions built like wings of a grand mansion, the building was finished as it stands today in 1907.
If you ever get to Chicago, go downtown and tell the taxi driver Macy’s on State Street and enter on the Randolph Street corner. Head towards the center of the 1st floor and when you get to the atrium, look up. You won’t miss it and you won’t forget it.
