Downtown Chicago - Aerial Photography by

I’ve taken my photography to new heights. Literally (LOL). This image was shot from a single engine Cessna at about 1200 feet. A first for me.
Downtown Chicago on an unseasonably warm November evening.

    Chi-Town! Love it, classic.

  • Yes sir. Chicago runs gamut of old to new styles in architecture and lighting. Thanks for lovin’ it.

wow terrific capture from a moving plane ! what a view!!

  • Thanks. It sounds like you appreciate the challenges in shooting this. I shot a lot of images and many of them came out blurry. Moving at only 100 miles per hour (161 kilometers/hour), slow for most planes, the window was open. Holding onto the camera with a vise grip was mandatory. I thought the wind force was going to rip my 5D out of my hands more than a couple of times.

WOW cool… and there’s no blur either. Awesome shot and that night sky is pretty fearsome and solid! How much fun was this? I kinda knew Chicago was supposed to be big but wow it’s huge :o)

  • The focus is OK. I’m not too happy about all the noise. Shooting at an ISO 3200 at the shutter wide open at f2.8 was mandatory to keep the shutterspeed fast enough to prevent blur. I had to monkey with the blur tools in Photoshop to clean up the sky. Thanks for noticing.

Aw was it not fun then?

  • It was fun, yes. I went up with my 12 year-old daughter. I sat in front with the pilot and she sat directly behind me. I was allowed to have the side window open, so her face was pelted by 100 mile per hour wind. You should have seen her hair when we landed. It was hilarious. We were both nervous at first, but once we got downtown, we were both mesmerized by the lights of the city and the whole flying experience. It was cool.

ROFL oh your poor daughter! LOL I bet her eyes were streaming, poor kid ;o)

  • I don’t know about her eyes, but she said she was OK. We all wore headsets/ear protection. You know like the old headphones that were as big as teacups. So that protected our ears very well.

Great, do not be unhappy, it does not have a lot of noise

  • OK. I will be happy. I covered up the noise in the sky with some Photoshop blur. Thanks for your nice comment.

    Fantastic!

  • Thanks I’m happy with this shot. You missed this series while you were away. My first time up in a Cessna doing aerial photography. It was a real trip, but fun and mesmerizing.
