If you look hard, you can see how the waves were frozen in an upcurl in small pools on the entire expanse of this grand lake; Lake Michigan.

Taken on the shoreline of Chicago in the middle of winter.

Ingredients: Water, below freezing teperatures, wind, waves, and a little sunrise.

I enjoy photography of all kinds. If it was how I supported my family financially, it would be a dream come true.

That looks bizarre lol. I don’t want to think about how cold it needs to be for a body of water that size to freeze quickly enough to get waves. Did you manage to get any abstract macros?

  • Funny you should mention that. I actually thought about it, but I would have to change lenses to do a better job of getting a closer shot and it was just too cold to bother.

Talk about not your ordinary beach/sunrise scene! This is REFRESHING in the truest sense of the word! A one of a kind winner!

  • Great comment Bonnie. Thank you very much.

I know that feeling Adam, although it would have been much colder than I’ve experienced. I only thought of it because a few weeks ago, I was at the local nature reserve, then to warm up a bit, I went for a walk from the hide to see if there were any photo opportunities. I had the 100-400 attached and saw a frozen puddle that was starting to defrost. I took a couple of shots and was going to take some more with the macro or wide-angle on the way back to the car, but someone decided to stand in it in the meantime. It may have been difficult to get the angle you wanted anyway.

Astonishing image! I never thought of this lake freezing, it seems so vast!

Thanks dolphin. Lake Michigan is very vast, but I’m sure the ice gets broken up in the shipping lanes. You just can’t see anything but ice as far as the eye can see from where I was standing.

Lake Superior used to freeze over when I was a child, at least most of the major bays, there was no shipping in the winter then. Beautiful shot! Instantly felt the ice.

Thanks Laog. Been to Lake Superior long time ago in the summer. Waded in it and it was still cold. LOL
