How did you do this, Adam? The effect is absolutely gorgeous! I’m astounded by its beauty and by one other thing—only one other comment on this photo! There should be dozens, given its exceptionality! Thank you for this work of art!

  • You know how somebody comments on one of your images and you check in to read the comment only to find that you never properly clicked on “Add Reply”, but hit Add Comment instead and the person you wanted to thank never sees it. Well, John Absher just dug this one up and commented on it and I realize that you probably never saw my thank you to you. So, please read below which is probably over a year and a half old now, but worth the read:

It was about this time 2 years ago. I was ticked off at the anger going on in the forums at SP. I took a break from them and got creative with some light. I took a small spotlight that was plugged into a dimmer switch cord I bought at Home Depot. I placed the spotlight on the floor facing straight up. I then poured water into a clear glass bowl or glass (I can’t remember which). I cut the stem off of a white chrysanthemum and placed the flower on top of the water in the bowl. Then I propped up some boxes and books so the bowl was suspended above the light. The illuminated the flower nicely. I experimented with light intensity by using the dimmer switch. Got my tripod out and using my Canon 100mm macro lens placed it facing straight down above the flower in the bowl of water and bracketed my exposures until I got the exposure I liked.Sorry for the long dissertation. Thank you. Thank you and Thank you again for purchasing this as a greeting card. It is a confidence booster. You made my day. As soon as I read that this sold as a greeting card to Bonnie Taylor, I ran out of the home office and yelled to my wife and daughter “i just sold one of my pictures as a greeting card”. They got excited.
So,Bonnie, you made my whole family happy today.

Thank you, Adam, for the explanation; I appreciate your taking the time to give the details of how you achieved this. The time and effort you exerted in taking this picture were well spent. Not only did you get a TERRIFIC result, but you also found peace in your own space instead of friction in the SP forums! I’d say MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! I look forward to receiving this exceptional photo!

Gorgeous Creation ~ thanks for allowing us into your Creative process ~ [..SP?..]

  • Thanks for your comment. SP is short for Shutterpoint.com. It is a stock photography website where I had most of my images for 3 years, but I am no longer on that site.

Holy Crap Adam. I don’t know how in the heck I ever missed seeing this before, but I’m sure glad I stumbled on it tonight. This is a work of art, for sure. I read your response to Bonnie and am in awe, not only of the result, but of the creativity you put into this shot. You know that BM you sent me a few days ago. That’s how I came across this one. I’ll continue with the mission, but this one should definitely be on the list.

  • WOW JOHN! This is an oldie, but a goodie for you and me I guess. Pretty cool that you found this one. As you read in my response to Bonnie, this one came about in the form of anger and frustration and I vented in a peaceful way on getting creative with light. Glad you like it. I’ll have to add this one to the list. Thanks a million for the great comment.

How simply delightful, you would never have guessed that you had started off so ticked off. I like the delicate colours and the way the light brings out all the lovely detail.

  • Thank you very much for your wonderful comment. I like this effect. I should try it one some other species of flowers some day.

WOW that’s an amazing capture!I love how you did it too I too like to try differant lighting

  • It was cool how it came out. I should try more of this idea this winter. It worth paying a few bucks for a cheap boquet of flowers from Jewel to capture something unique.
