I enhanced the lines and features of this Civil War re-enactor who already had a very expressive face. With this image I used a tutorial from the NAPP site called Dramatic Photo Gritty Look. Converted the image to black and white, copied it and pasted it over a new colored (off white) layer and erased the outside edges of the image. Lastly placing an image of an old tarnished metal plate as a third layer converting it to overlay and reducing the opacity trying to imitate an 1860’s vintage tintype image. Image captured in Port Gamble, Washington, June 2009.

My photographs are not always technically correct, I tend to break the rules but I do that knowing what the rules are and having a reason to do so. My photographic images are what and how I see the world around me in my minds eye—they are who I am.

    G’day BRYAN!

You have done a great job from go to whoa in producing an image that looks as if it came from that era.
A lot of character from your compliant model and good eye contact make this compulsive viewing.
    Well done Sirs!

  • Thank you Dennis—I really enjoy photographing both the local Civil War reenactments and at the local living history museum at the Hudson’s Bay Company fort that operated in this area up through the later 1800’s. The re-enactors do a great job and like having their photographs taken which comes out in the images. Not to mention they are a bunch of characters!

Great work Bryan, it’s a convincing fake.

  • Thanks Paul—these re-enactors make it easy, they are fanatical about realism and they love to have their picture taken.
