Sunrise on Reflection Lake by Bryan Peterson

I just got back from spending the last 3 days on Mt. Rainier and had to process one image before I go to bed. Every visitor to the park has an image of Mt. Rainier from this view point at Reflection Lake but not too many are willing to be on the mountain before sunrise to catch the first rays of the sun. This is my verson of everyone’s photograph of Mount Rainier at Reflection Lake. This image was processed as a HDR image.

My photographs are not always technically correct, I tend to break the rules but I do that knowing what the rules are and having a reason to do so. My photographic images are what and how I see the world around me in my minds eye—they are who I am.

I can see why they call it Reflection Lake. Nice foreground too.

  • Thanks Jay—I’ve never quite understood why it’s called Reflection Lake.

    G’day Bryan,

What a cracker of a sunrise landscape you have here mate!
Excellent composition of this very lovely scene and quality is oozing from every pixel due to all the very good techincal aspects of the photograph.
The lighting may well be Nature’s own but you have made a great exposure/s and handled the HDR processing very well as it does not look as though it IS an HDR image!
The depth of field is marvellous, encompasing the foreground right to the mountain top and the focus is nice and crisp with the assistance of the clean, clear mountain air. (Reminicent of Thordis’ Icelandic photographs).
The contrast is very pleasing and the colours beautifully natural.
I applaud the way you have brought out the swirling mist.
    Great work that man!

  • Thank you very much Dennis. I agree that many of the HDR images look too hdr—My concept with HDR is to try and create an image that is more like what our eyes see and mind interprets. Your comment noting that the image doesn’t look as if it is an HDR image is the BEST comment I have gotten on one of my HDR images!!!
