A New Book - and a paying job by Bryan Peterson

Posted on May 05, 2011

I have been absent, for the most part, from Redbubble over the last couple months working on a coffee table photo book of Tacoma’s Union Station the First 100 years.

Working alongside fellow photographers Rick Creatura and Peter Serko we were able to put this book together in a very short period of time, managing to meet the completion date of May 1, 2011. In that we were actually working for the US Federal Court that was a good thing, I am still living at my home.
Construction on the Union Pacific Railroad station in Tacoma, Washington started in 1909 and was completed in 1911 opening it doors to the public on May 1, 1911. The station was an architectural wonder with it’s great domed rotunda and Tacoma became the hub of transportation for the Pacific Northwest. In the 1960s and 70s trains were a thing of the past, the train station fell into disrepair and it looked like this wonderful landmark was going to go the way of the wrecking ball. In the 1970’s a suggestion was made by a Tacoma citizen that the Federal Government should save this historic piece of US history and a movement to turn the building into a Western District Federal Courthouse was under way. The building has been wonderfully restored to it’s original glory as the Federal Courthouse and the rotunda, that it is known for, is open to the public and for public functions.
I guess one person’s voice (with a lot of help from the community) occasionally is heard and can make a difference.

Hi Bryan, must be great to get paid to do something you love to do. Congrats on your success.

  • Bryan Peterson:

Thanks Paul, with the short time frame (2 months) I was a little nervous about getting it completed before the open house but we got it printed and without too many type-os. I didn’t have much spare time during those 2 months though.

  • Bryan Peterson:

Thanks Dennis, one of the best parts of the job was having access to all the old photography from 1909 up through the 50s and 60s. As it turns out my home town was quite the destination spot for all the high rollers in the 20s and 30s.
