Artist's Description

Enniscorthy castle an imposing Norman stronghold that was siezed during the 1916 Easter uprising by the Wexford volunteers at the same time as the GPO in Dublin. The clock I have blended in is the original clock from the GPO which is now kept at Enniscorthy castle.

Enniscorthy was the last to surrender after the failed uprising, and only after the order to surrender had been given by Padraig Pearse himself.

The town has a history of rebellion. Nearby vinegar hill was the stage for a notable battle in the 1798 rebellion (of which more later…)
