Tres Froid

The bitter cold creeps quietly through the cracks
As the walls resist by
Trying hard to keep in the animal warmth
The draughts silently find their paths
Around the frames
And through the single panes

Some curtains thick with ancient nap
Slow the insinuating chill
Others flap thinly welcoming the icy wind
No barrier to the black frozen night
Rent by time and neglect
Hung and yet not quite dead

Outside the grass whitens and becomes hard
The moon is closer to the earth
The air vanishes with icy clarity
As the water grows its skin
Still the battle rages coldly
For the heart of the ancient house
