It was a day
Not like any other day
A day when a strange shade of orange
Changed to something more revealing

A day when the broads strutted their stuff
And the men did their best to keep up
Without the promised beer
A day of grown ups and children
A day that started and had to finish
A day to live and perhaps survive

A day when the exposed superficiality of time
Was covered by the magnolia of the present
And there was no longer the subtle hint of nicotine
Which showed that the curtains of fate had fallen past repute

It was a Burtle day
That started slowly and built to its inevitable climax
A day with threatened rain
A day that threatened deluge
That never delivered
Anything but hormones and cherry tartlets

It was good to be part of that day
Covering over the sins of the past
Removing the staples that bound us to the curtains of our fate
Stripping the restricting tape that held us back

Whatever we did left so much undone
There is always a greater mountain to climb
But we reached the lesser peak
On that great day
And these songs will be sung for many years

We give thanks
And can we have our rollers back
We are proud
And where is my screwdriver
We are thankful
That now its your turn
