Back to My Root

I’ve been going right back to my root
Although I suspect that you never will guess
That the particular root that’s in question
Is significantly more than it’s less

My root it is mighty and deep
And firm in good earth it would stick
It’s anchored so well and it’s so sad to tell
That those subterranean branches are thick

In my lawn it has rested for many a year
If I’m honest it hasn’t done harm
But now it prevents me, it taunts and it tempts me
Like some brooding and unlucky charm

After hours it is partially exposed
I’ve sweated and dug and exclaimed
But threatening curses and magical verses
Have not left it significantly maimed

It’s been saved by the rain on this fine July day
Bathed in a victor’s warm shower
But come tomorrow it may be with sorrow
As determinedly I’ll make it cower

Back to My Root
