THE JOYS OF GARDENING

I dreamed I had a garden
That relaxed and soothed my soul
Full of brilliant colours
And fascinating smells.

The gentle humming of the bees
And swooping butterflies
Added to the tranquil state
Of time slowly passing by.

But this is far from truth, I fear
Living only in my dream
My garden far from peaceful
I look, I shout, I scream.

The nettles grow as if bewitched
At least two feet each day
And dandelions with their many clocks
Inevitably hold sway.

Biting, stinging things abound
Disturbed by fork and hoe
And everywhere this gardener went
Those hungry insects go.

Roots entrenched, too big to pull
Grow silently and fast
Underneath my very feet
As soon as spade has passed.

Bloodied but unbowed I go
Retreating for a while
Knowing that those garden things
Will only raise a smile.

Beaten only for the day
With scars and gashes proving
That nerves of steel are what’s required
To get the damn thing moving.

So in the morn with hopes undashed
Again I’ll prove my mettle
And end up where I was before
Another sapping battle.
