Childhood Dreams - The Hunt for the Stag by

I remember stories as a child talking about hunting for the stag. I asked what a stag was and I was told it was like a deer or an elk. I sat and thought about it for a while… being the precocious child I was, I finally asked, “Why chase them? If you wait long enough, they come to you. Like when Daddy goes hunting.” The look on my Grandfather’s face was stunned, then his face crinkled in a smile and his belly bounced with laughter. He said I tickled his funny bone. I never found that funny bone either. :o)

Created from a sketch, painted in Photoshop using my natural media brushes with an impressionistic style. I had 5 layers and this took me about 6 hours.

This carousel is in Orange County California.

WOW! This whole series has been truly amazing and just when I think it is ending, you create another fantastic piece!

  • I have just a few more to make to complete enough for 2 more calendars. I may bring some more in later as I get them done. I am always on the lookout for anything unusual. Thank you Kim. :o)

Beautifully done! And though your stag isn’t white, the title reminds me of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, where the children (then partly grown, and all kings and queens) go riding, hunting the stag. They’re trying to catch him, so he’ll grant them three wishes. Lovely image, indeed!

  • Narnia was much later in life. I haven’t seen any of these little deer in any color but the brown so far. I thought it was a fun animal. :o)

I never saw one with a stag, that’s a great story too. I bet my Mom would say, “don’t run with that, you might poke your eye”…

  • LOL! I love your comment. Too funny. There are quite a few with the Dentzel animals and they have the stags or deer. Whatever you want to call them. I hope to see what other amazing creatures I can find while I’m visiting Vancouver these next two days. :o)
