Did you ever wonder where this word came from? Some people thought the word came from Arnold Humdinger. But since he was eight years old when the word came into being, that is highly unlikely. Most respected etymologists claim that the word’s origin is unknown, but dinger meant “something amazing” or “something superlative” as far back as 1809. There is no dispute that humdinger (and dinger, for that matter) are both American in origin.
This little hummer posed very nicely for us on our last walk out at Dana Point Harbor in Dana Point, CA. This is an Allan’s Hummingbird. Not to be confused with the larger Rufus Hummingbird. These little ones are very tiny. Picture taken with a Nikon Coolpix P510.
