Whilst I lived in Missouri, I was rather miserable for the most part. Until I saw the birds. My family and I had just moved into our first home in Springfield. I loved seeing the Cardinals, Juncos and other lovely birds. My favorite was the Painted Bunting. We had two pairs living in our trees. Each at the furthest points in the yard. The males tolerated each other well enough, but there was always a hen fight. The little males would turn their backs on the fight and act like nothing was going on. Every once in awhile though, one would let the curiosity get the best of him and he would look over his shoulder to see how his mate was faring and decide whether to join the fight. It was rare, but when the chicks came, they would really squabble then. I felt like I had won a great prize by having these beautiful birds so close. It was before I had a camera and the time to do much art work since my twins were just a year old at the time. I don’t miss the humidity, weather or the bugs. I do miss the friends and the birds. :o)
Created in Photoshop based on a sketch and my bird books for reference, using my wet media brushes. This had about 7 layers and took about 5 hours to complete.
