Featured in Beautiful Garbage Nov 4th, 2009.
History
Deva Asylum lies in the grounds of the very active Countess Of Chester Hospital in Chester, the asylum was built in 1827 and opened in 1829, its original name was The Cheshire County Lunatic Asylum.
Through out the years the asylum changed its name and in 1953 it was renamed Deva until 1984 when it was once again renamed to The Countess Of Chester a name which it still goes by today.
Originally the asylum was meant to house upto 500 patients but over the years it expanded as did new wings and annexes until it could finally house over 1500 patients.

that’s for sure,,,great shot,, can’t imagine and don’t even want too think about what these people went through in these places, you know conditions like ADHD, which is so common now,, was missed back in those days,, and you were considered insane and put away,, thank the lord we have come a long ways in medicine.

Thanks a lot Linmarie, it’s quite amazing what people were ‘put away’ for and ‘treated’ for.

wooh, that’s rather freaky..
(or seems so according to convention; but who knows, it could have been quite convivial, depending on one’s own outlook and who the neighbours were. The Romans opted to have such unseparated public lavatory facilities, in places.)
Well captured; a bit of social history there.
