The colors and textures are scrumptuous, the drapery makes wonderful patterns, especially the horizontal black, the fine angled back pillow that draws the eye distant. Her expression is wonderfully serious and enlightened at the same time, and she looks pleased, happy with the coming child. I love everything about this but her right arm. I tried the pose myself, and the hand like that FEELS relaxed and comfortable, but it’s the only part of the photograph that looks tense; the right arm is not clearly defined and appears too short. I believe photographers have an especially hard job in that all areas of a shot have to be considered, and it must take enormous discipline, forcing yourself to see the whole picture and not a series of parts. Probably stands you in good stead for winning arguments, too. I’m accustomed to letting myself get slammed between the eyes to the point of diorientation. If I didn’t have the luxury of sorting it all out on a canvas over a long period of time I couldn’t produce a thing. And I am for some reason desperate to include it all, all the stimulating bits and periferal delights and flashes of color in the banquet view. I pray you’ll forgive my going on like this. But Cathleen, in such a short time you’ve gone from amateur to professional, every photograph more impressive than the last, and reaching I am sure the image you intend—a major accomplishment. You’re so bright and fast! I want you to have every advantage over people who have been doing this for decades and still don’t get it right, so I really try to look, then the mouth opens, words come out.
