The pohutukawa and the waka

The pohutukawa and the waka

Kawhia is home to two sacred trees. Legend has it the first waka carrying Tainui people from Hawaiiki was tied to one of them 800 years ago, and a Maori princess bedded down in a cave beneath the other. But local iwi disagree on which honour belongs to which tree.

My husband noticed me working on this shot and said excitedly ‘That’s the pohutukawa the first waka came to”. Nice, now it’s a bit more than just another landscape shot to me :)
