Somewhere Zen
I am such a hopeless romantic. I always wanted to paint something romantic. After I finished the painting “Orchid-ish”, I had this vision of these very sexy, pink orchids reaching out into the painting. For me, the painting isn’t as much about the orchid as it is about the stretching out to fill the space, the longing to connect with its surroundings. I find that very romantic, very endearing.
This orchid was living in my home for a long time, so I guess I was very connected to it. I brought it in to the studio and sketched it out on the canvas. I went with my very first sketch and made sure I had nothing but classical music on when I painted it. It became one of those paintings that you feel sad when it’s finished because you just want to keep painting it. This one was a sheer delight for me.
