This is really cool what else did you do to it other then invert it?
In Photoshop Elements 9.0 I first isolated the tulip and created a black background by darkening it. Then I used a layer and I modified it by inverting.There I discovered that you have several options besides of the normal inversion mode. I used “Raw colors light”, then I went back to Picasa3 to adjust the contrast manually.
