The Robert Dollar Company’s steam engine #3 doing a photo roll-by after a shake down drive to Niles from the Niles Canyon Railway’s maintenance facility in Sunol, California.
This engine had just gone through several months of refurbishment, and a friend told me they were firing it up on Saturday, and that there might be opportunities for a few good shots. So, I packed up my cameras and headed for Sunol. I was expecting to just shoot a bunch of photos of the engine warming up and building up pressure, maybe moving around the yard a bit.
Instead, after the crew was ready to shake it down, they hooked up a bunch of cars and announced that they were going to Niles, and that those of us up there watching or shooting pictures could go for the ride. Hell yeah I went. I love these old steam engines.
So, off to Niles where I shot this picture. Then, when we were getting ready to head back to Sunol, the Engineer announced that they could take 4 – 6 passengers up in the cab. Guess who was the first one there.
Oh yeah, it was a great day. Much more than I expected when I managed to drag my butt out of bed on a Saturday morning.
