Went to the Niles Canyon Railway maintenance facility in Sunol, California again; mostly to get shots of the volunteers working on the restorations. These men and women volunteer their time to restore old locomotives and assorted train cars to their original glory, and they do one hell of a job.

Check them out some time, it’s pretty cool. And they might even use some of my shots on the web site in the future.

I wanted to get pictures of somebody welding, and this guy and an assistant ddn’t let me down, although my favorite shot was of this guy using a plasma cutter to make this plate fit before welding it onto a train car.

I did darken up the image a bit to make the sparks stand out.

I’ll shoot anything that catches my eye, but I love it when somebody says “I never looked at it that way before” or even just a little “ooooh”. If I can make you stop and say “hmm”, that’s the best. I normally use minimal processing; a little bump in color and/or contrast, maybe a little cropping. But sometimes I just can’t resist the urge to play with an image.
