I think this was a box jelly, but not sure. Shot at The Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Okay, probably not a box jelly. It does appear to be a spotted jelly. I went back to the Monterey Bay Aquarium (where I shot this pic) website and found this:

I’ll shoot anything that catches my eye, but I love it when somebody says “I never looked at it that way before” or even just a little “ooooh”. If I can make you stop and say “hmm”, that’s the best. I normally use minimal processing; a little bump in color and/or contrast, maybe a little cropping. But sometimes I just can’t resist the urge to play with an image.

    Well captured!
I think it is one of the White Spotted Jellyfish, rather than a Box Jellyfish.

  • Thanks Trish. You’re probably right.

Great shot, Deff not a Box Jellyfish though.I have personal and extremely painful experience with a very close relative to the Box Jellyfish called a Tamoya.

  • Ouch. All I know about jellyfish is that they are beautiful and they have a nasty, sometimes fatal sting. Hope you’re recovered. I’ve heard that the symptoms can sometimes last for years.

I’m good thank you Bob, was a long time ago now. Not a feeling you ever forget though. Not a pain I would wish on my worst enemy.(think hot iron held to skin while being stabbed with hypodermic needles) I obtained 2m of sting, 4m would have killed me. :)
