The USS Hornet is an aircraft carrier that was brought into service during WWII and saw combat in the Pacific Theater. It later served in Korea and Viet Nam.
It is probably most famous as a spacecraft recovery vehicle though; recovering capsules from NASA’s Gemini and Apollo programs. Most notably the Apollo 11 capsule that carried the first humans to a landing on the moon.
The Hornet currently serves as a floating museum and is permanently docked at the Alameda Naval Air Station in Alameda, California.
