Headed out for a drive, with no particular destination in mind. Just had to get out for a while. Ended up in Salinas, a town I have passed through many times on Highway 101, but except for spending a couple of nights in a cheap motel by the highway because it was close to Laguna Seca a few years ago, I had never spent any time here.

This shot has almost everything I like to shoot in just one image; lines, angles, light, shadow, texture. Some people don’t like this kind of image. They say “there’s no single focal point that draws the eye.” If that was what I wanted to shoot, I would take a picture of a dot. The devil is in the details.

I’ll shoot anything that catches my eye, but I love it when somebody says “I never looked at it that way before” or even just a little “ooooh”. If I can make you stop and say “hmm”, that’s the best. I normally use minimal processing; a little bump in color and/or contrast, maybe a little cropping. But sometimes I just can’t resist the urge to play with an image.
